How to Set Up an Assessment Style Quiz

How to create an Assessment Style Quiz and how Assessment (multiple choice, correct answer) quizzes work

Assessment quizzes calculate a score based on which answers are marked correct. Score ranges then determine which result a quiz taker sees.

You’ll be able to:

• Understand how Assessment Style scoring works

• Add questions and set the correct answer(s)

• Configure results using score ranges (beginner/intermediate/advanced)

• Test the expected score and result before publishing

How This Quiz Type Works

Before touching the builder, it helps to understand the logic behind an Assessment Style quiz.

Every question has answer choices, and one (or more) answer choices can be marked as correct using the Answer Key.

When someone completes the quiz:

  • Each correct answer adds to the quiz taker’s total score.

  • The quiz taker’s score is compared to your result score ranges.

  • The result whose score range contains the quiz taker’s score is displayed.

⚠️ Important: This quiz type is based on correct/incorrect scoring. You are not connecting answers to “types” using result correlations.

This guide uses a simple assessment quiz example throughout.

Here’s how it’s structured:

  • 3 results: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

  • Each question has answer choices with one correct answer (some questions may allow multiple correct answers)

  • The result is determined by the quiz taker’s total score and the score ranges for each result

💡 Note: If you plan to show correct/incorrect feedback after each question, write explanations that help quiz takers learn (not just “Correct” or “Wrong”).

Step 1: Plan Before You Build

Planning upfront saves time and helps you avoid scoring gaps (like a score that doesn’t match any result range).

Decide on the following before you open the builder.

Your results

These are the outcomes your quiz can assign based on score ranges (levels, grades, categories, etc.). Write a short description for each result so it’s clear what it represents.

Example results:

  • Beginner

  • Intermediate

  • Advanced

❗ Important: Your results must cover every possible score a quiz taker can earn, with no gaps or overlaps between score ranges.

Your questions

Write questions that test knowledge or comprehension.

  • Example question: Which statement is true about [topic]?

Your answer choices

Write answer choices that clearly include the correct answer.

Example answers:

  • One correct answer

  • Plausible distractors (incorrect answers that are believable)

Your answer key plan (worksheet)

Map your correct answers before building. This makes it easier to spot issues and validate the quiz later.

⚠️ Important Warning: If you allow multiple correct answers for a question, decide that intentionally up front so the question wording supports it.

Your score range plan

Decide how many questions you’ll have, then outline score ranges for each result.

Example (10 questions total):

Step 2: Open The Quiz

  1. Log in to the Interact dashboard.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • To create a new assessment quiz: click + Create Quiz,

    • Select Start from scratch,

    • then choose Assessment.

    • To edit an existing quiz: find the quiz and click Edit (or click the pencil icon) to open the quiz builder.

Step 3: Select a Question

  1. In the left sidebar, click Questions.

  2. Select the question you want to configure.

  3. If you need to add a question, click Add Question.

Use Image Answers (optional)

You can switch to Image Answers at any time:

  1. Click the Settings icon on the question.

  2. Enable Use Image Answers.

  3. Click Save.

Step 4: Open Answer Key

  1. Click Answer Key on the question.

❗ Important: Verify the exact label in the live builder and use it consistently throughout your documentation.

Step 5: Set the Correct Answer

This is where you define which answer choice(s) are correct for the question.

  1. In Answer Key, select the correct answer.

  2. (Optional) Select multiple answers if more than one answer is correct.

  3. (Optional) Add an explanation to display after the question is answered.

  4. Click Save.

Select Multiple Correct Answers (when appropriate)

Only select multiple correct answers if your question is clearly written to support it.

💡 Note: If you allow multiple correct answers, make sure quiz takers can reasonably understand that more than one answer may be correct.

Reveal the Correct Answer after a Question (optional)

You can customize the correct/incorrect reveal styling per question.

  1. Click Settings on the question.

  2. Under Global Question Settings, enable Reveal correct answer.

  3. Click Customize to change the text and color styling for correct and incorrect answer reveals.

  4. Under Content, update the reveal text.

  5. Under Design, update the colors.

  6. Click Save.

⚠️ Warning: If you reveal correct answers immediately after each question, quiz takers can learn the answers as they go. Avoid this if your assessment needs to function like a test rather than a learning experience.

Repeat for every question

Repeat Steps 3–5 until all questions have been reviewed. Every assessment question needs an intentional answer key.

Common Scoring Patterns

These patterns help you think about assessment setup (not just where to click).

Pattern 1: One correct answer per question

This is the easiest starting setup. Each question has one correct choice, and your score is the number of correct answers.

💡 Note: This is a starting pattern, not a requirement.

Pattern 2: Multiple correct answers (used sparingly)

Use this when the question is specifically designed for it (for example, “Select all that apply”).

Pattern 3: Explanations for learning-focused quizzes

Add a short explanation after each question to help quiz takers understand why an answer is correct.

Pattern 4: Reveal correct answers during the quiz vs. on the results page

Decide whether quiz takers should see correct answers immediately (question-level reveal) or only after completion (result-level summary).

Build balanced and Accurate Assessment Scoring

Every possible quiz taker score should map to exactly one result.

A simple way to check for scoring issues is to confirm:

  • Your result score ranges cover the full scoring range (from the minimum possible score to the maximum possible score).

  • Score ranges do not overlap.

  • Score ranges do not leave gaps.

Configure quiz results

  1. In the left sidebar, click Results.

  2. Click Add New Result.

  3. (Recommended) Create three results for a balanced experience:

    • Beginner

    • Intermediate

    • Advanced

  4. As you add results, the quiz will automatically adjust the score ranges for each result to distribute them evenly.

  5. Click Settings on each result page.

  6. Choose whether to enable Show Answer Summary to show a list of correct answers on the result page.

  7. (Optional) Click Customize to customize the text and colors for the correct answer reveal, then click Save.

  8. Choose whether to show the quiz taker’s score on the results page, then click Save.

❗ Important: If you manually edit score ranges, re-check that every score maps to a result (especially the lowest and highest possible scores).

Save and publish

  1. Save your question settings and answer keys.

  2. Click Publish.

  3. Click Publish changes.

  4. Take the live version once more after publishing.

⚠️ Remember: Changes aren’t live until you publish.

Troubleshooting

Problem

What to check or change

A question isn’t being counted correctly

Open the question and confirm a correct answer is selected in Answer Key, then click Save.

Correct/incorrect reveal isn’t showing

Open the question Settings, then confirm Reveal correct answer is enabled and saved.

Explanations aren’t showing

Confirm you added an explanation in Answer Key and clicked Save.

A score doesn’t match any result

Review result score ranges to confirm there are no gaps (for example, 0–3 and 5–7 leaves out 4).

A score matches multiple results

Check for overlapping score ranges and adjust so each score maps to exactly one result.

Answer Summary isn’t showing on results

Open the result Settings, enable Show Answer Summary, and click Save.

Can I select more than one correct answer?

  • Yes. In Answer Key, you can select multiple correct answers when more than one answer is correct.

Can I show the correct answer after each question?

  • Yes. On the question Settings, enable Reveal correct answer, then click Save.

Can I show the quiz taker’s score on the results page?

  • Yes. Open the result Settings, enable the score display option, then click Save.

Can I use Image Answers on an assessment quiz?

  • Yes. On the question Settings, enable Use Image Answers, then click Save.
